INGROWN TOENAILS

Conditions we treat

WHAT IS AN INGROWN TOENAIL?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail curves and grows into the surrounding skin. While it can affect any toe, it most frequently occurs on the big toe. This condition can develop at any age and may lead to pain and inflammation, characterised by tenderness, redness, and swelling.

WHAT CAUSES INGROWN TOENAILS?

If you trim your nails too short or at an angle, you’re at a greater risk of developing an ingrown toenail. Other causes may be:

  • Trauma or injury

  • Tight-fitting footwear (narrow shoes)

  • Oedema (swelling of the feet)

  • Lack of maintenance of regular foot hygiene

  • Infection of the nail or nail bed

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR INGROWN TOENAILS?

A podiatrist can assess your ingrown toenail to determine the likely cause and provide the most effective and efficient treatment. They will trim the problematic nail edge and provide guidance and education on proper toenail cutting techniques.

If the issue persists, they can perform minor surgery to remove the nails edge, preventing that specific part from regrowing and causing further problems.
